In 2021, the European Centre For Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) published the epidemiological report that includes data on Legionella disease cases in Europe, stating that both the number and the notification rate of the disease remained at the highest levels observed, continuing an increase that has been ongoing since 2013 despite improvements in hygiene and disinfection practices of water systems.

The new EU Directive 2020/184 introduces Legionella as an analytical parameter for domestic distribution systems, activating careful monitoring and analysis of potential risks that affect the quality of water coming out of taps used for human consumption.

Legionella is transmitted primarily through inhalation of aerosols, small airborne particles of water that contain the bacteria and can come from showers, fountains, hot tubs, cooling towers, and water systems in hospitals, healthcare facilities, hotels, nursing homes, and home water systems.
